Berry Smoothie

Fall happens later in California than in most states, which means berries are available longer. This smoothie is one I have for breakfast frequently during the summer and early fall. It’s strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, (and a banana) and manages to combine almost all of my favorite fruits into one meal.

I also like how this smoothie makes eating bananas much easier. Since I don’t like bananas very much, I usually  hide them in a smoothie or banana bread to eat them. Smoothies are good in this way – stealthily introducing less liked fruits that are nutritious. Maybe that’s also why some people can put vegetables and grass into their smoothies. While I haven’t tried that yet, it would be interesting to try someday.

For this recipe, I used Fage non-fat Greek yogurt but you can substitute it with any plain yogurt you like or a berry flavored yogurt. I suggest trying a Greek yogurt if you want a more filling smoothie, because Greek yogurts have more protein. Greek yogurt will also make the smoothie thicker for the same reason. Plain Fage Greek yogurt also has a low sugar content, so the sweetness you taste in the smoothie will be mostly from the fruits and honey.

Yummy smoothie! Even my picky hubby liked it. I had to add a little almond milk since my blender needed some liquid to get things moving. This recipe is a keeper!
