Handy Kitchen Tools

Here are some good basics to have in your kitchen, so you’ll be well prepared to make any of the recipes you come across this site.

Baking:

  • 3 Mixing bowls (1 Large, 1 Medium, 1 Small)
  • 1 Spatula to scrape mixing bowls
  • 1 hand-held electric mixer with mixing and whisking capability (or a Stand mixer if you’re feeling fancy!)
  • Measuring Cups, Spoons
  • Parchment paper, Aluminum foil, Cling Wrap
  • Bread pan (9×5 inch)
  • Square Pan 9×9 inch (for brownies, blondies, anything square)
  • Cookie sheets  (2) & parchment paper & cooking cooking rack (2)
  • Cupcake pan for 12 cupcakes
  • Cake pans (6″ or  8″ or 9″, depending on what size cake you like. Whichever size you choose, get 3 pans in the same size so you can bake all 3 layers of your laker cake at once)
  • Cake decorating materials
    • Cake turn table
    • Decorating Tips
    • Icing piping bags
    • Large spatula for spreading icing & off-set spatula for cake tops

Cooking:

  • Non-stick pan, with lid  (or a well oiled iron wok – but this would be much heavier)
  • Flat heat resistant spatula (for flipping pancakes, scallion cakes, anything flat)
  • Dutch oven pot with lid (soups, stews, etc.) or alternatively a metal pot with lid if you like things lighter.
  • Small saucepan with lid
  • Cutting board (plastic or wood. The glass ones squeak when you cut)
  • One sharp chef’s knife (this will go so far! I have 1 Chef’s knife and 1 fruit knife and those are the only knives I’ve really ever needed)
  • One fruit knife
  • A vegetable / fruit peeler
  • Rice Cooker
  • Blender
  • Slow cooker
